Interview with Mikey Dread - Channel One Sound System
Ahead of our session with the mighty Channel One on 23rd of August at Vibe Bar we caught up with Mikey Dread to find of how and why he became one of the founders of UK Sound System Culture, getting an insight into the industry over the past 30 years.
How and when were you first influenced by Reggae music?
"From home, from the old man, it was the old man’s sound system, when he had it we used to listen to reggae music, as children, you went through that schooling so that’s where you got to know it. Basically down to the old man really."
When did you start running the sound system, and how long was it before you started running dances that you were really happy with?
"We started running the sound system around 1978/1979 something like that, I actually started playing the sound system with my brother from about 73, but when we actually started taking things seriously it was from 1979 and really when we started to turn over money dances probably from like from 83/84, that’s when we started playing Carnival and started doing the Universities and Polytechnics so that’s when it started to evolve into a money making thing."
What have been your personal favorite dances so far?
"Personal favorite dance was a time when we played at Notting Hill Carnival in 84/85. We played in a place called the Shed, it’s not where we play now, it’s now a housing estate. The original site was like a big giant shed, and that was the stage when we used to finish at 10. One day we ‘d played for 2 nights and the second night the organisers apparently stopped the other sound systems from 8.30/9 o’clock and the Shed was jamm anyway but it became more rammed in that hour and that’s when we had big wardrobe boxes what we used to call big double boxes, big quads, 4 facing. If you see one of my boxes now you have 1 18” speaker in there, we used to have 1 box with 4 of them in there. We used to play about 2 of them. So that was really one of the outstanding sessions and if you’re talking about Channel One in the early days you’re talking about the Carnival in the Shed. That place you could actually drive the whole truck in it was that big. It was massive. It was the other side of Portobello Market, just round the corner from there. but it’s a big housing estate now."
Where does the name Channel One come from?
"It comes from Channel one in Jamaica. That’s where we got the influence from. I used to deal with them from the 80s, that’s where I used to get the dubs from Channel One studio in Jamaica."
How would you describe the music you play on Channel One?
"I would describe the music we play as message music, that’s how I describe Channel One Sound System, it’s a messenger sound. That’s the meaning really and the positivity of the works."
What have you got in store for the rest of the year?
“That question you have to ask Management”
Management – “haha! Well, we have a busy time ahead – One Love Festival on Saturday, Vibe Bar with Reggae Roast on Sunday, Notting Hill at the end of the month. In September - Exodus Festival in Croatia, High Wycombe, Channel One meets Rootikal in Harlesden, October we’re off to Plymouth, Manchester, Northampton and Italy as well as having a birthday celebration to celebrate 30 years of Channel One which will take place in Camden on the 25th October. November we’re playing in Brixton. We’re also touring at the end of November/ beginning of December hosting a Dub 2 Dubstep tour taking place in 6 cities nationwide.. look out for more information. If you’re interested in booking Channel One, please email rachelchannelone@googlemail.com”
What can someone expect to feel at a Channel One dance?
“You can expect to feel inspiration and receive spiritual food, food of music. Very inspirational, very spiritual. True jah works.”
If you weren’t a sound system operator, what would you be?
“I think I would have been a record shop owner. I did that for a few years, but doing the 2 just wouldn’t go and either one or the other had to go, and the record shop had to go and the sound system came out on top. I always wanted to have a record shop because of the knowledge what I have.”
What are you listening to at home right now?
“I’m listening to a new album called Mystic Morning, a new artist from New York called Ras Teo. He’s got a very good album coming, he sent me that the other day, it’s a very good album, so hopefully we’ll be sorting out some dubs from that later on.”

Gates open 12 pm - 11:30 pm | FREE ENTRY | 91 - 95 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL
